Phoenix is hot! But that doesn’t mean we don’t like to get outdoors. Whether it’s spring, fall, or winter, we like to get out. Even the hardcore enthusiasts sometimes like to get out in the summertime and enjoy a hike even when the sun is beating down. But where are the best hikes? Encompassing more than 500 miles of the great Sonoran Desert, Phoenix Metro has plenty of beautiful desert spaces for outdoor enthusiasts and hikers alike to enjoy.
One of the easiest and most well-known hikes in the Phoenix Metro area is the Lost Dog Wash Trail to Ringtail Trail Loop. Hikers on this trail can expect to experience a full loop of wildflowers, cacti, and breathtaking views through mountainous valleys into the Sonoran Desert preserve. Yet, there are many more trails other than this one that Phoenix residents can enjoy. Take a step with us outside as we bring you our favorite hikes in the Phoenix Valley.
1. Granite Mountain Loop Trail
If you want an all-around trail that offers a little something for everyone, you’ve got to spend some time on the Granite Mountain Loop Trail in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. It’s a diverse area with trails that wind through unique rock formations. You’ll see a wide array of desert flora and fauna, from fascinating and beautiful desert plants and cacti to insects, lizards, and desert mice (if you can spot one!).
Even better, Granite Mountain Loop Trail is suitable for all levels of hikers. It boasts well-maintained trails with little fluctuation in elevation. It’s a great hike for grandma or grandson alike. And while it is an easy hike, it stretches over five miles, so those looking for a good amount of exercise will get it on this excursion. Do your best to carve out a good half-day for this hike!
2. Treasure Loop Trail
Treasure Loop Trail is considered by many to be one of the most scenic trails in the park. The trail offers incredible views of the Superstition Mountains and also contains many of the desert’s most beautiful rock formations. Since it is located in Lost Dutchman State Park, we do recommend getting there early as this is a popular trail for people of all ages. You’ll also want to see how the rocks are illuminated in the soft, dewy light of an Arizona morning.
One thing to keep in mind is that from June to September there may be closures in the park due to wildfires. Click here to check and see if there are any wildfire closures in the park when you want to go.
3. Holbert Trail
We figured some of you want a bit more of a challenge. So, why not try the Holbert Trail, located in the South Mountain Preserve. The best part about this challenging trail is that it is not far from the city center, making it perfect for someone who wants a quick escape from the city without requiring a big trek into the mountains.
If you start the trail early, you may even have a hike to yourself as these trails do not fill up quickly. Even more, as you hike, you’ll spot some historic ruins, beautiful rock formations and truly spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
Once you are done with the trails consider whether you might want to hire someone to manage your HOA needs.
