It’s a great time to visit Phoenix in the spring. Temperatures are definitely warm but haven’t quite hit the skyscraping marks that they do in the summer months.
There’s also an abundance of great entertainment to see during April and May. There are plenty of festivals in Phoenix and the surrounding communities that can appeal to the region’s broad interests and audiences. The biggest ones feature music as well as a family-friendly atmosphere.
We’ve rounded up some of the key events in those months to highlight here. As with any event, we feature, it’s always best to check the website to confirm details.
Country Thunder Music Festival
If you’re a fan of modern country music, few festivals in the country have the kind of lineup that this one sports. Taking place in nearby Florence, Country Thunder definitely has a great range of musicians and bands to see this year. The event is scheduled for April 13-16 this year.
The biggest acts on this year’s bill are all men who have mixed classic rock sounds with the country twang: Jon Pardi, Luke Bryan, Cody Johnson and Dierks Bentley. Also on the bill are some emerging artists that are making waves such as Ashley McBryde, Kip Moore and Bailey Zimmerman. There’s also room for a classic artist such as Lonestar or Tracy Byrd.
You can find out more about Country Thunder – from where to park to where to find food and drink – but visiting the event’s website.
Maricopa County Fair
It’s either a springtime or fall rite for most big cities, and in Phoenix, it’s an event that takes place as the cooler temperatures start to heat up. The Maricopa County Fair takes place from April 12-16 at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix.
This is the place to be if you want a traditional fun fair ride. There are close to 40 on display every year, from Ferris wheels to tilt-a-whirls and beyond. The fair also features the traditional livestock and agriculture displays, along with a huge vendors’ village and of course all of the fair food you can try out. There’s also a ton of entertainment, including musical acts, dance troupes and martial artists, among others.
The website for the fair has a lot more details, including theme nights.
Rainbows Festival
Part of Phoenix Pride, this annual two-day event at Heritage Square Park is an ideal event for the LGBTQ+ community and its allies. A free admission festival, Rainbows takes place on April 1-2 from 10 am to 6 p.m.
The event is a springtime precursor to the Pride Festival that takes place in October. It features food trucks, vendors, craft cocktail makers and live entertainment. This year’s event includes performances by Lady Bunny, the famed OG drag queen that founded New York’s popular Wigstock event. Also performing are Venus D Lite, a Madonna impersonator who was featured on “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” and Niki Haris, a pop music singer and dancer who has toured with the actual Madonna for decades.
